The Health Benefits of Drinking Cacao

Cacao is one of the world’s healthiest foods! Some would say it’s the healthiest food.

Often called ‘Food of the Gods’ - its scientific name Theobrama cacao derives from the Greek ‘Theo’ (food) and ‘broma’ (of Gods’) - it has been a central part of both ancient and modern cultures. To the Mayans, cacao was discovered by the gods in a mythical mountain that contained other delicious foods. It was enjoyed as a drink and a medicine, and an annual festival was dedicated to the cacao god. It was also used as a form of currency.

The Olmecs (the first major civilization in Mexico) are thought to be the first to ferment, roast and grind cacao beans as early as 1500 B.C.E. When Hernán Cortés returned to Spain in 1528 and brought cacao with him, he introduced this ancient bean to the modern Western world. Now, cacao is not only fermented, roasted and ground, but made in all sorts of different ways as chocolate bars, cacao powder, hot chocolate, chocolate syrup and more.

So what are the benefits of cacao? And how can it help your body and wellbeing?

Here are 4 key areas in which cacao benefits our health:

1. High in antioxidants

Cacao contains more antioxidants than most foods. Antioxidants are molecules stable enough to neutralise free radicals ( free radicals are unstable molecules that can be highly damaging to the body). Specifically, cacao contains flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants and actually the reason behind cacao’s astringent flavour. When flavanols (a type of flavonoid) react with our saliva, the bitter taste is formed.

Importantly, the antioxidant activity of foods can lower with time. Cacao beans, however, have been shown to be stable for over 75 years, meaning their antioxidant powers stay for a long time.

Cacao also contains vitamins B, C and E, all of which also act as antioxidants.

2. Supports our nervous system

Studies have shown that cacao can decrease neuroinflammation, increase cerebral blood flow and improve neural pathways. In particular, increased cerebral blood flow allows for the formation of new blood vessels and new nerve cells in the hippocampus (an area responsible for memory and learning, amongst others). Cacao can also protect from neural injury and was used by ancient civilisations to balance the nervous system.

From my experience and that of participations in cacao ceremonies that I have lead, drinking cacao can leave you feeling more mentally clear and emotionally balanced.

3. Cardiovascular benefits

Cacao improves heart functioning, blood pressure and healthy platelet (blood clotting) activity. In particular, a 2006 study found that cacao consumption was associated not only with a lower cardiovascular mortality but with all-cause mortality (i.e. death due to any cause).

4. Protects the skin

The flavanols in cacao have been shown to protect the skin from UV light damage. Just a 12-week consumption of cacao decreased skin redness induced by UV light by 25%. Similarly, one study showed that consuming cacao for 12 weeks increased blood flow to the skin by 70% and oxygen saturation in the skin by 80%.

This means that the skin is kept healthy, glowing and with reduced signs of aging.

Is all cacao equal?

Cacao’s benefits as listed here are primarily present in its more pure form. Processed cacao (such as confectionary chocolate and cocoa powder) has decreased antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and, in turn, cannot claim all of the benefits listed above. Mixing cacao with milk, sugar and other things can further decrease the benefits as the healthy components of cacao are now less easily absorbed and used by the body.

One study showed that the flavanol content of store-bought cacao lowered by almost 80% when compared to natural cacao.

So, to gain the full health benefits and support your body and mind, consuming minimally processed cacao is best.

It’s important to note that all cacao is somewhat processed so that it is edible and, in fact, the fermentation processes increases flavonoids (antioxidants). Minimally processed cacao, in particular ceremonial-grade cacao, therefore, is best.

My cacao recommendation

I purchase my cacao from KAKAO. I enjoy is a mix of 15-20g cacao with 200ml hot water, which I blend with an immersion blender. This creates a beautiful, frothy, bubbly cup and a delicious beverage.
