Ep. 16: The History, Philosophy and True Purpose of Yoga - Hatha Yoga & How Yoga Spread in the West (Yoga Philosophy: Part 2)

Today, we start with the Hatha Yoga Pradapika (HYP) and follow yoga’s journey to its widespread in the West today. The HYP introduced movement to the practice of yoga, as well as cleansing practices for ascending our Kundalini energy. I also talk about the lineage of Krishnamacharya, who is often called the ‘Father of Modern Yoga’ due to his influence on yoga’s spread through the West.

Intuitively Being You is a podcast about all things intuition - connecting with your inner self, cultivating self-love, supporting your nervous system on the healing journey, self-trust, self-care, personal growth, spirituality and sooo much more. I break down everything you need to know to find your inner guide, get clear on who you are and follow your intuition to create deep fulfilment from within.

It took me about 15 minutes to get into my flow with this one. 😄 So, apologies that it’s not the clearest of episodes, but there really was just so much to share and I struggled at times to sort through it all in my mind and notes. I considered re-recording, but in the end I am posting as is. I recorded this episode on two separate days, and the second half is much clearer. Thanks for joining me in this slightly less-than-perfect ep. ♥️ Maybe I'll re-record in the future xx

I cover:

  • What hatha yoga means at its root vs. how it’s used today

  • Energy practices for cleansing the body

  • What shatkarmas are and how they help us to purify

  • How the Hatha Yoga Pradapika differs from the older yogi texts: Asana or moral codes first?

  • A new system for the chakras

  • Krishnamacharya’s influence on yoga

  • The key yoga teachers who spread yoga in the West

  • A reminder that everyone is welcome to the practice of yoga and a yoga class! xx
